101 MOONS

mutewax returns with MW010A, a heavy dancefloor tool from label head Mutecell. Landing two days short of twelve years after the label's launch at Kantine am Berghain, Berlin, it is the first of two singles that lead to MW010 R3VENGE F4NTASIES, the label's tenth record. The label has done this before: SAVINIA and GRIS GRIS led to ONAC1D in 2023.

The eponymous 101 MOONS is a hypnotic 142 BPM weapon built for the late-night hours. Engineered with almost no dynamic range, it is designed to sit under another record and lock in the room. Warped analog textures and wordless vocal cuts send chills down the spine.

One, nothing, one. 101 reads the same from either side, the way a moon comes back. Its digits add up to two, and it lands on the second of October.

The number and the scarab have met before. In 2015 mutewax 003 opened with 101, a track by Pascal Roeder, under a scarab on the cover. The scarab is the label's sigil: a mark made to carry an intention, kept since the flyer for its first night. It returns now, cut in paper by Mauritian collage artist Chloé Ip, with a moon where its body should be. Counting nights is where the series starts.

He mastered all three parts himself. It is the first time he has done his own mastering. The record was finished at bōucan road studios in Mauritius, with a cover by Chloé Ip and design by AVNEESH: a record made by Mauritians, twelve years after the label opened in Berlin. The symbiosis of Berlin techno and Mauritian club culture remains the identity of this producer: bold, underground, and globally rooted.
